Step by step brick repointing

Brick repointing

Before you try to repair or repoint mortar, there are a few things that you have to consider. The first thing is that, the joint that you want to seal has to be ready to receive the new mortar. If this is not done correctly, the mortar will not hold in place. The following steps will help you get the desired results when repointing brick walls.

Prepare the wall

In preparing the wall, the first thing that you will need to do is to rake them out. You do this by scraping out some of the old mortar in the horizontal lines. You can use a chisel and hammer for this. After this, you will have to clean the vertical lines in the same way.

Wash the wall

You will notice that you will have created a small mess on the wall and therefore the next step in the preparation of the wall for new mortar, is to wash the entire wall. This will also remove any debris that is on the cracks where you want to place the mortar. Another importance of making the wall wet is that it will prevent the wall from sucking all the moisture from the mortar before it dries up. This is worsened when you are repointing brickwork so ensure that you use enough water.

Mix the mortar

For the best repointing results you will have to mix the mortar well. It is not as hard as most people put it out to be. Most of the mortar will come with a guide on how to mix it for the perfect paste. However, you will have to stir water into the dry mortar until its consistency is thick enough. You will then have to wait for fifteen minutes and stir again. It is only after this that you can use the mortar. Ensure that you use it before 8 hours are over.

Paste the joints

The next step is to fill the joints. Even though this is a very easy thing to do, it should be done with care to ensure the desired results. Repointing mortar can be challenging at this part but all you will need are the right tools. The best tool to use is a brick trowel where you scoop some of the mortar with it and fill in the joints. Start with the bed joints then move on to the head joints. After the process of repointing bricks is done, level them and remove excess mortar using the flat side of the trowel.
